Safe driving tips: New Year’s Eve

Driving safely on New Year’s Eve is crucial, as the roads can be more dangerous due to increased traffic, impaired drivers, and festive distractions. Here are some tips to help ensure a safe journey:

  1. Have a designated driver
    • If you plan on drinking, don’t drive! Have a designated driver, use a ride-share service, or take public transportation!
  2. Drive defensively
    • Expect other drivers to be unpredictable, you never know who is impaired or distracted. Keep a safe distance from other drivers and be prepared to react quickly.
  3. Avoid driving late at night
    • Late-night hours, especially after midnight, are peak times for impaired driving. If possible, avoid being on the roads late.
  4. Take your time
    • New Year’s Eve is about celebrating safely. There’s no need to rush. Take your time to drive carefully, arrive safely, and enjoy the festivities without the stress of trying to beat the clock.

By following these tips, you can help ensure you and others stay safe while celebrating the arrival of the new year!

Navigating Snow and Ice: A Guide to Safe Winter Driving

Driving in snow and ice can be daunting, but with the right precautions, you can stay safe on the road. Here are a few essential tips to help you stay safe while driving in snow and ice.

  1. Pre-trip check
    • Before leaving, make sure your vehicle is winter-ready.
      • Check your tires: Ensure that your tires have sufficient tread and are properly inflated. Consider switching to winter tires if you live in an area with heavy snow. These tires are specifically designed to provide better traction in cold temperatures and slippery conditions.
      • Check your battery: Cold temperatures can place extra strain on your car battery, which can lead to failure. Have your battery tested regularly and replace it if it’s showing signs of wear.
      • Test your brakes: Properly functioning brakes are essential, especially in winter conditions. If your brakes feel off, get them checked right away. Don’t take any risks when it comes to braking.
  2. Drive slow and steady
    • When the roads are covered in snow and ice, the best thing you can do is slow down.
      • Reduce Speed: Snow and ice reduce traction, making it harder to stop quickly. Reducing your speed gives you more time to react to sudden obstacles or changes in road conditions.
      • Leave Extra Space: Increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. On slippery roads, stopping distances are longer, and more space gives you the time needed to avoid a potential collision.
  3. Avoid sudden movements
    • Sudden movements can be dangerous in winter weather. Keeping a steady, controlled approach is key to staying in control of your vehicle.
      • Steer smoothly: Abrupt steering can cause your vehicle to slide, especially on icy patches. Make all turns and adjustments in your steering slowly and deliberately to maintain control.
      • Brake gently: When braking, do so gently and avoid slamming on the brakes, as this can cause your vehicle to skid. If your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS), apply steady pressure to the brake pedal. For vehicles without ABS, gently pump the brakes to avoid skidding.
      • Accelerate slowly: Fast acceleration can cause your tires to spin, especially on icy roads. Ease onto the gas pedal gradually to avoid losing traction.

Driving in snow and ice requires extra caution and preparation. By getting your car winter-ready, driving cautiously, and knowing how to respond to dangerous conditions, you can significantly reduce your risk of accidents in winter weather. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when navigating snowy roads. Happy and safe driving this winter season!

From Trailer Park to Transport Tycoon: The Inspiring Journey of Tyler “Sweetie Boy” McCormick

Tyler McCormick and His Father Tim McCormick

Tyler “Sweetie Boy” McCormick’s story begins in a trailer park in a small town of Arcade, NY, nestled in upstate New York. He lived with his father time, a hardworking and dedicated truck driver. While his father was on the road it was his Grandmother Bae who provided the warmth, guidance, and stability he needed.

At the tender age of seven, during one of those cherished Saturday night drives with his father, Tyler made a solemn vow: he would one day establish his own trucking company. This promise, born from a deep respect for his father’s relentless work ethic, became a guiding star for Tyler.

As he approached his senior year of high school, Tyler made a bold and transformative decision to move to Richmond, VA. Leaving behind the familiar confines of Arcade for the up-and-coming bustling city life was a significant culture shift for young Tyler. To make ends meet, he took on various odd jobs, demonstrating a work ethic as forceful as his father’s.

By the age of 20, Tyler’s resolve to fulfill his childhood promise had only strengthened. Determined and persistent, he sought advice from anyone willing to share insights on entrepreneurship and leadership. These conversations laid the groundwork for what would become a remarkable business venture.

In 2010, Tyler founded Sweetie Boy Transportation. What started as a humble beginning quickly flourished into a thriving enterprise. Today, Sweetie Boy Transportation boasts a workforce of over 250+ employees and operates extensively throughout the United States and Canada.

Tyler attributes his success to the unwavering support of his father, his grandmother, his wife Katie, and the dedicated team at Sweetie Boy. He often reflects on how their guidance and encouragement have been instrumental in his journey from the trailer park to becoming a transport tycoon.

Tyler ” Sweetie Boy” McCormick’s story is a testament to the power of determination, the importance of family support, and the impact of a promise made by a young boy on a Saturday night drive.

Discussing Driver Safety With Director of Hub Operations and AutoPilot Safety Hayden Nachtigal

Creating a safe work environment for drivers is a large part of who Sweetie Boy Transportation is today. In 2020 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that more than 1 in 3 long-haul truck drivers experienced a serious crash during their time working on the road. 127 people were reported to have been injured in a crash while driving for work. Mitigating this risk is discussed with AutoPilots and Car Haulers alike every day. Director of Hub Operations and AutoPilot Safety, Hayden Nachtigal speaks about how Sweetie Boy works to make safety a top priority for all employees.

With over 200 employees, and most of them being on the road, making sure that everyone is being safe on the road is no small task. The professional transportation industry has nailed down this issue with the creation of apps such as Samsara, which Sweetie Boy uses to monitor CDL drivers. The drive service market for such apps is newer, but over time Sweetie Boy has found ways to monitor safe driving. Hayden Nachtigal speaks about how we measure our AutoPilot’s safe driving by saying, “ We use Mentor by eDriving to measure our driver’s overall safety. With the app tracking 5 major categories: Speeding, Distractions, Hard Accelerations, Harsh Braking, and Cornering”. The app uses these metrics to create a score out of 850, much like a FICO credit score. By analyzing the scores throughout the company, Sweetie Boy is able to accurately measure how safe AutoPilots are on the road. The Director of Hub Operations and AutoPilot safety goes on to speak about how these analytics are important to improving the safety metrics of the apps drivers use, “ The Mentor program we use is ever evolving and sometimes requires us to pass along the information to Mentor to improve the program”.

Safety is constantly at the forefront of Sweetie Boy’s mission. Hayden says, “We are extremely focused on being safe everyday. Once our drivers punch in or put on their safety vest they are professional drivers”. Every day our drivers are held to a higher standard, and the effort drivers, dispatch and hub managers put in shows that. Giving drivers a clear understanding of how their Mentor score works is a part of that, “(We have) Monthly safety meetings going over trends and specific topics we need to improve on as a company with safety. Daily and weekly coachings by the AutoPilots specific manager, going into the detail about each infraction to understand the situation that led to the infraction. This way the driver learns and improves their overall driving”. AutoPilots have also turned to a friendly competition, comparing safety scores to see who can do the best at each hub.

Overall, safety is the top priority of office staff and drivers at Sweetie Boy. Whether it’s abiding by federal standards or finding ways to go above and beyond those expectations, Sweetie Boy’s team works hard to ensure the safety of all drivers on staff. Unsafe driving is corrected, and the safety standards are always upheld and maintained.

Thank you to Hayden Nachtigal for participating in this post and for speaking on AutoPilot safety within Sweetie Boy Transportation.
